All of Nuuk can follow the first flight from Copenhagen

A grand celebration is in store as Nuuk is set to inaugurate its new international airport on November 28. The event, which promises to be a major milestone for Greenland, will feature live broadcasts on big screens, festive activities, and a spectacular fireworks display.

A Historic Moment for Nuuk

The new Nuuk International Airport will officially open its doors with the arrival of the first direct flight from Copenhagen. Scheduled to land at 12:35 PM, Air Greenland’s Airbus A330neo, operating as flight number GL781, it’ll complete the journey in just 4 hours and 40 minutes. This marks a significant step forward in connectivity, as Nuuk’s newly extended runway, stretching from 930 to 2,200 meters, allows for direct international flights.

Warm Welcome for the First Passengers

Upon disembarking, passengers will be greeted by local schoolchildren waving Greenlandic flags and performing festive activities. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede, will address the approximately 300 passengers with a welcome speech, emphasizing the importance of this new chapter in Greenland’s aviation history.

Previously, travelers from Copenhagen could only fly directly to Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq. The new route to Nuuk not only enhances efficiency but also underscores the city’s growing importance as a hub for both Greenland and the broader Arctic region.

Community Events and Celebrations

The excitement surrounding the first direct flight has inspired Greenland Airports to host a public event at the local community center from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Visitors can enjoy a traditional Greenlandic kaffemik and watch the historic landing of the A330neo, named Tuukkaq, streamed live on big screens.

Later in the evening, a gala dinner for invited guests will be followed by a grand musical and fireworks display. The celebration is open to all of Nuuk’s nearly 20,000 residents.

Greenland’s Largest Infrastructure Project

The new Nuuk International Airport is Greenland’s largest construction project to date, unlocking significant opportunities for Nuuk and the country as a whole. Greenland Airports highlights the strategic potential of the airport in boosting international connectivity and economic development.

However, the festivities remain contingent on final approval from the Danish Transport Authority, which must grant the necessary certifications for operations by November 28.
